There are people who think (or believe, or claim) that data scientists don’t need to know mathematics to be successful.
I can agree that for some projects, it’s not neccessary to have formal mathematical training.
A strong educational background helps to apply more scientific approaches and understand the algorithms used.
At Quantup, we often work on projects that require understanding mathematics and reading scientific papers. See the whiteboard from one of the team meetings.
Many projects cannot be completed without a deep knowledge of mathematics.
That’s why, as data scientists, we only have hired mathematicians who can write good software or computer scientists who understand mathematics.
